A Account of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to book a place to stay upon arrival, yet once I got there, a major event was taking place and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I considered the possibility of spend the night at the airport – but quickly found Canberra airport, not like the one back home, closes around the clock. Unsure of what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and began walking near the casino, believing it was a place to spend those hours somewhere operating 24/7. This was not ideal at my peak for acing a crucial interview the next day, yet, as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
It seems I seemed confused as a young woman spotted me loitering in the city center and inquired if I was OK. I recounted my situation and immediately she suggested I could crash on the ground of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, given that my my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: one stuffed baguettes she had from her evening job. This gave me the bathroom and somewhere safe and safe to sleep.
With hindsight, I now understand what a big chance she accepted being a woman allowing a male stranger she had only just encountered crash at her place. Back then I was in my own unawareness and not even thinking to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she took that chance – but still very grateful.
Ultimately, I did not attending ANU, and I lost touch with her again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of generosity. I hope life has rewarded her generosity tenfold. We could all use more people who show such kindness.
