A Limited-Edition Pokémon Card Aims to Curb the Influence On Resellers
Marking the launch of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique partnership is underway. The Pokémon Company alongside London's Natural History Museum will launch a pop-up shop stocked with special merchandise. Fans can look forward to products like stationery, plushes, and artwork all drawing from the institution's aesthetic. The big draw, however, is a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a free bonus for the pop-up. The store is scheduled from on-site at the museum to online between late January and mid-April.
The Book That Inspires the Collaboration
Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated volume filled with beautiful illustrations depicting Pokémon in their natural habitats. The concept like the kind of research an in-world scientist might publish after adventurers submit their data, or what Charles Darwin could have sketched had the famous islands were populated by flying-types instead of finches. Part of the charm stems from the book's scholarly approach, presenting Pokémon as a legitimate subject for inquiry. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess doctorate degrees in animal behavior and ecology.
Why This Special Card Different
The company regularly for The Pokémon Company to release cards for major tournaments or crossover partnerships. Many of these collector items typically highlight the iconic mouse Pokémon that acts as the series face. What distinguishes this latest museum card is its unusually large dimensions. Although precise specs were not publicly disclosed, availability will certainly be highly restricted, and fans able to get just one card with each transaction.
Limiting Speculator Activity
According to a company announcement, some of the merchandise may also be available outside the institution itself. But, broader availability will only be specific stores within the UK. Importantly, fans will not be able to acquire the card through the official web shop. Although reseller interest is inevitable, the setup suggests they will have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities on this occasion. For those unable to attend, consider an alternative like fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City in the coming months.
"All profits from purchases from the Museum shop and from its online store, which covers Pokémon products, support the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. That encompasses the research of 400 scientists who are scientific inquiry and finding solutions to the planetary emergency," it notes.
