The movie, though, may align so closely with the carefully constructed image promoted by official channels that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment rather than a challenge.

The Crafted Strongman

Over a long period, the Kremlin and its entertainment industry have collaborated to craft a made-to-measure persona of Putin. This character is a political superhero devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a local 007 who always knows more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a TV series released last October, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “rescue” Russia from disorder. Although the character's name Mikhail, the implication is unmistakable: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions frequently result in reinforcing this same narrative rather than debunking it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to subvert the leader's mythology by framing him as a symptom but as a consequence, shifting the narrative weight to the political machinery around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, the president is shown as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to steady the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and all but beg him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, desiring permanent power.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. In reality, none of this ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody ever begged him to take the job. The position was in essence a casting call with many contenders. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the country in practice.

Curiously, the move to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s arrival as James Bond. His harder interpretation led Russian media and online audiences to draw visual parallels with Putin. Edited images replacing the actor's likeness with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an star well-liked by viewers there, the authorities are likely to seize the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of public dissent, the opposition, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

Domestically, the president is often an omnipotent figure who never appears on screen. His influence is signaled through portraits or calls “from above”. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally echo the very myths it perhaps aims to examine.
