Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
