The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
