The British tennis star earned the most notable victory of his professional journey by coming back from a set down to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory signifies Norrie's first ever victory over a current world No 1.

"Massive. Extremely important for me," commented Norrie, who is now the newest English competitor in the record books to beat a global number one. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just aimed to appreciate my tennis in the second half of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the biggest success of my tennis journey, my first win over the global number one and arguably the strongest athlete in the world right now."

The British player, positioned 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme run of nine finals in a row and 17 straight elite tournament successes, which marked the best series of performances in the young champion's developing career.

Contest Overview

The top seed seemed to be advancing smoothly to a win early on as he eased in the initial stanza. Yet, the British contender steadily fought his way into the match by delivering with greater precision and pulling the Spaniard into prolonged, demanding points. His persistent shot tolerance and consistency steadily took its toll.

During large parts of the contest, Alcaraz served well but he had difficulty to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The 22-year-old appeared particularly uncomfortable hitting his signature shot, which has been the most effective stroke in the world for most of this season, haemorrhaging 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 mistakes. Across the net, the British player presented Alcaraz very few errors, sustaining his reliability, physicality and depth throughout while serving efficiently and picking his spots to advance forward and strike effectively.

After struggling for months due to a significant left forearm injury and difficulties with his form, Norrie dropped as far down as No 91 this year. Following appearances in the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the French Open fourth round subsequently, this win further underlines the veteran's development as he aims to come back to the world's top twenty and even higher. Alcaraz, in spite of his incredible accomplishments, is has not yet figure out how to deliver his top form on indoor courts.
