Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An freshly coined acronym surfaced a couple of months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, according to medical experts such as paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is unusual for doctors to attend to a young patient who has lost their complete family. However, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors returning from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs contend that atrocities are continuing. Authorities disputes these allegations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is implicated in. But while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that global media are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it once represented. A competition that once promoted peace has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
