C. Palmer's and O. Dembélé photographs atop the famous observation deck prior to the Club World Cup final looked impressive, but it isn't wise to propose that the two could have gained more from summer relaxation than play.
Top athletes struggling with fitness issues was foreseeable before the governing body's expanded competition began. Jurgen Klopp described it as “The poorest idea ever,” citing concerns over lasting impacts of squeezing more matches into an increasingly congested calendar. Klopp remarked, “Previously it was the South American championship and the European Championship, currently it’s the Club World Cup, next year it’s the global tournament. This implies no recovery for the participants involved.”
European football's governing body permitting league games abroad marks a sad shift, concluding football as we have known it.
It was far from the most extreme of forecasts. The fixture list was already stretched due to congestion from the coronavirus crisis, the 2022's World Cup taking place in winter, and the European elite competition growing in size. The global players' union has repeatedly cautions about rising physical issues and player burnout. However, the response has been to introduce more football. Authorities do not regard participants and managers seriously. The danger is that the best players have little remaining to give when the global event – enlarged to forty-eight teams for the first time – takes place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States next year.
Cole Palmer Example: An Elite Player Driven Too Far
The Chelsea forward is the clear illustration. The young talent was the inspiration for his club at the Club World Cup, destroying Dembélé's Paris Saint-Germain in the final, but he has barely been seen recently. The suspicion is that Palmer has played too much. He has been plagued by a pelvic issue for a year and, although there is no sign that the forward requires surgery, it is hard not to feel that he is, as Arsène the former Arsenal manager once said of Jack Wilshere's case, in the danger area.
That could be cause for alarm. A Chelsea or national team match without their star is a diminished event. He is an exceptional player, but everyone has bodily limits. It is absurd that he has passed three consecutive summers without a proper break. He assisted England youth team to claim the continental title in 2023, was key when the senior side reached the European Championship showpiece, and was even playing for Chelsea until the midpoint of July previously.
When Is It Become Excessive?
The attacker played 57 games for Chelsea and country in the 2023-24 campaign, his first complete season as an regular international and Premier League player. He missed the league phase of the Conference League last season but was participating in the elimination rounds and was best player when the Blues defeated the Spanish side in the final at the end of spring. The PSG game was Palmer fifty-fifth of the term. He had additionally played for England in their World Cup qualifying match against Andorra at the start of June.
Therefore, don't be surprised that Palmer has missed a host of games this season. His is a chronic issue, but it certainly might have been addressed if he had been granted a holiday last summer. This is not a controversial argument. Chelsea received zero special treatment; they had a compressed, 14-day pre-season. The Paris game was on July 13, and Palmer started when a tired, unprepared Chelsea opened the season by tying 0-0 with the London rivals on 17 August.
Spanish giants Madrid's T. Alexander-Arnold is out with a ruptured thigh muscle after participating in the Club World Cup following a draining season for his former club.
Chelsea manager Maresca was uncertain to foresee how the extra workload and absence of preparation time would impact his squad. By now, however, it is clear that the London club are struggling. Levi Colwill ruptured an ACL on the opening day of summer training. L. Delap ripped a hamstring against Fulham, Dario Essugo has had an operation on a leg injury. Tosin Adarabioyo and Andrey Santos are injured. Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, and Joao Pedro are competing despite the discomfort.
FIFPRO Findings and Team Responses
FIFPRO's yearly player workload monitoring report concluded that players who took part in the Club World Cup after finishing a national competition campaign were among many at the elite of the men's sport who did not have sufficient summer breaks, hurting playing levels and increasing the chance of physical issues. Last week the Chelsea boss said in relation to the number of fitness problems at his club and PSG: “Probably it’s certain results from the Club World Cup.”
Will anyone listen? The Gunners' Noni Madueke, who left the Blues after the Club World Cup last-four match, is out for eight weeks with a joint problem. PSG were without Marquinhos, K. Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doue, and Dembélé when they defeated the Spanish giants recently. Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz have also had fitness problems. PSG were back in play in the Uefa Super Cup on 13 August. The schedule goes on.
Spanish Madrid's Injury Problems
Also absent at the moment are Real Madrid's Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jude Bellingham. Alexander-Arnold came off a draining championship season with his former side, signed for Madrid, featured in their run to the semi-finals of the tournament, and is injured with a damaged hamstring. T. the manager was stating in spring that Bellingham ought to have had an operation on a joint injury. The surgery was postponed, though, with the pressures of the schedule leading a further emerging talent to persevere and keep going.
The Reasons Deny the Evidence?
For what reason deny it? Some observers have pointed out that athletes who didn't participate in the competition have too had fitness issues. This is not an sufficient defence for the Club World Cup. Athletes will suffer injuries. Injuries and tiredness have been on the rise. It still seems insufficient when authorities are forcing in additional games, effectively risking the product they aim to market. The football, remember, is not better if the best stars are absent or worn out.
