Fly-tippers submerge field in mountain of garbage

The area has been called an "environmental crisis".
Correspondent surveyed the scene and stated the heap appeared to be "six meters tall at least".

Waste criminals have deposited a mountain of garbage in a rural area in Oxfordshire.

The "environmental catastrophe developing in full view" is approximately 150m (490ft) extending and 6m (20ft) high.

The massive heap has materialized in a plot of land adjacent to the River Cherwell close to Kidlington.

Parliament representative raised the problem in parliament, stating it was "risking an environmental emergency".

Conservation group said the illegal garbage pile was established approximately a month ago by an criminal network.

"This constitutes an environmental catastrophe taking place in full view.

"Each day that elapses elevates the risk of hazardous seepage reaching the waterways, contaminating fauna and endangering the health of the whole watershed.

"The Environment Agency must take action promptly, not in the distant future, which is their usual response period."

Access ban had been implemented by the regulatory body.

It is difficult to distinguish any specific items of garbage as it looks to have been shredded with dirt blended.

Part of the garbage from the uppermost part of the heap has collapsed and is now merely five metres from the stream.

The River Cherwell is a feeder stream of the River Thames, which indicates it travels through Oxford before connecting with the Thames.

The MP stated the expense of removing the garbage would be significant

The MP asked the authorities for help to remove the unauthorized dump before it caused a fire or was washed away into the river system.

Addressing elected representatives on this week, he stated: "Criminals have deposited a mountain of unlawful plastic waste... weighing many tons, in my electoral area on a water-adjacent land alongside the River Cherwell.

"River levels are growing and thermal imaging show that the waste is also warming, increasing the risk of fire.

"Regulatory body reported it has restricted capabilities for enforcement, that the estimated price of disposal is greater than the entire annual allocation of the municipal authority."

Environment minister stated the authorities had assumed responsibility for a failing waste industry that had created an "growing issue of illegal dumping".

She informed MPs the authority had served a prohibition notice to prevent further access to the location.

In a announcement, the authority confirmed it was investigating the matter and requested for information.

It said: "We acknowledge the public's frustration about situations like this, which is why we respond against those culpable for environmental offenses."

A recent investigation discovered initiatives to combat significant waste crime have been "severely overlooked" despite the problem developing into larger and more sophisticated.

The Environment and Climate Change Committee recommended an independent "thorough" inquiry into how "endemic" environmental offenses is tackled.
