A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us locate the video.
We are checking images and video circulated this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures originated relied on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
