Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police shared security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
