RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels down to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."
In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The United Nations reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
