No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
