One two-month voyage through Australia has been cancelled days after the tragic passing of an elderly lady who was abandoned by the ship on a distant island.

The elderly woman had been hiking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the Coral Adventurer, but parted ways from the group for a rest. The liner left without her and came back after some time after the personnel realised the woman was missing.

A major search operation found her remains the subsequent day.

Officials are examining the event, alongside investigators and the official investigator.

The CEO of the shipping company stated that passengers and crew on the ship were notified that the remainder of the journey had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and prior technical problems".

Via official communication, he added that passengers would be issued a full refund, and said the organization was working "to coordinate the travel back of the individuals via chartered flights".

Officials also released an updated communication, and said they had "provided a order to the Master" prohibiting any new passengers from getting on the ship.

The representative said that they would inspect the ship in the port city upon its coming back.

Sequence of Occurrences

The ship initially left the coastal city on October 24th, and was only 48 hours into the expedition at the point of the senior passenger's demise. The remote island was the opening port on the itinerary.

Travelers on board - who usually pay tens of thousands of dollars to participate in the expedition - were taken there for a shore visit with the possibility of hiking or underwater exploration.

Relatives Statement

The offspring of the deceased woman said that her relatives was "shocked and saddened that the ship left the island after an planned excursion without my parent".

In her statement, she characterized her mother as an "energetic elderly person" who was a member of a walking organization.

"Based on limited information we have been provided, it seems that there was a failure of responsibility and common sense," she said.

She added that she wished the investigation would be able to pinpoint what "the operator should have done that might have preserved Mum's existence".

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a very hot period, and she took sick on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"She was asked her to return, alone. Then the ship sailed away, seemingly without doing a headcount.

"At a certain moment in that chain of events, or shortly after, she succumbed, alone."

Organization Response

Via official communication, the CEO confirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with investigators to support their inquiry".

He stated that the firm was "deeply sorry that this has happened" and had extended its full support to the relatives.

Cruise Industry Procedures

The vessel accommodates up to 120 passengers with 46 crew, according to official data. It was specifically designed to enter distant regions of the Australian coastline and is outfitted with "tenders" - minor craft used to ferry travelers on day excursions.

Incidents of this nature are infrequent, and liners have procedures to document which travelers are embarking or disembarking, according to travel authorities.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] on the ship just isn't an possibility," an authority commented.

Vessel operators consider these processes with great importance and have "sophisticated systems in place to stop such events from taking place," the expert further stated.

"This is most likely a surprising - and tragic - single occurrence."
