Survey Shows Danes Stand as Europe's Most Avid Public Nudity Enthusiasts

While Germany's populace were known for a reputation as the continent's most devoted advocates of public nudity, fresh findings suggests that Denmark's citizens not just more tolerant concerning removing clothes in public, and also more prone to have engaged in it.

Survey Methodology

The comprehensive survey examined six European states – United Kingdom, Denmark, the French republic, the German state, the Italian peninsula along with Spain. Results indicated that Danish respondents stood out as most inclined to declare that stripping off publicly was perfectly acceptable – plus to have acted on it.

General Attitudes Across Europe

As expected, substantial percentages across all six countries felt that stripping off was permissible in official clothing-optional locations. Between 84-94% expressed no issues with private nudist camps, whereas 77-91% supported nudist beaches.

More than half Danish people report being completely naked publicly

Cultural Differences

While most people in all participating nations disapproved to nudity in settings including municipal baths and public gardens, Danish attitudes differed significantly. Around thirty-five percent of Danes believed it appropriate to strip off on a non-nudist beach, and eighty-seven percent thought stripping off in personal outdoor space was acceptable.

Open Countryside Attitudes

Danish respondents showed greater openness toward nudity in the natural landscapes. Meanwhile, most people in other surveyed states – ranging from 58% in Germany to 78% in the UK – regarded walking unclothed in nature as unacceptable.

Skinny Dipping Practices

When it comes to open water nudity in the sea, lakes and waterways, Denmark's residents demonstrated significantly the greatest acceptance. Approximately 64% considered the behavior entirely appropriate, in contrast to just twenty-five percent of Italian respondents, thirty-one percent of participants from France, thirty-two percent of British people and 49% of Germans.

Actual Participation Rates

Participants from Denmark didn't just state accepting perspectives and also exhibited high participation levels. In response to queries about which various situations they had actually stripped off as mature individuals, over 50% of Danish participants reported multiple instance.

That stood against 45% of Germans and forty-four percent of respondents from Spain. A marked divide emerged among these states and the others, with only 31% of French people, twenty-five percent of British people and 22% of Italian participants acknowledging to having bared all in public places during their adult lives.

Specific Location Breakdown

  • Participants from Denmark emerged as the most likely to have been naked in their private garden and swim naked, with approximately one-third stating such practices
  • Compared to only around one-quarter of respondents from Spain
  • approximately one-fifth to one-third of participants from Germany
  • nineteen percent of French respondents
  • around one-eighth of British people
  • 11-12% of Italians

German Naturist Tradition

Participants from Germany, though, maintained their dominant role when it concerned stripping off in locations specifically designed for naturist activities. This reflects Germany's traditional "free-body culture" – a cultural phenomenon tracing its roots to the 1800s.

Although decreasing popularity in the past few years, Germany remains among most permissive states internationally for stripping off in authorized locations. Zones of beaches, lakefronts plus campsites are reserved by law for clothing-optional recreation.

Designated Naturist Sites

Data revealed that just twelve percent of Danish respondents had stripped off in official nudist locations like shorelines or campsites. That was higher than UK engagement at 6%, matched French percentages at fourteen percent along with Italian at eleven percent, but fell below Spain's 22% plus German 25%.

Future Willingness

Participants from Denmark furthermore demonstrated more openness to engage in public nudity going forward. Approximately half stated they would be willing to remove clothing in a open space, against forty-two percent of Germans, 38% of respondents from Spain, thirty-four percent of French people and 29% of both UK residents plus respondents from Italy.

Group-Specific Trends

In all six countries, men demonstrated greater enthusiasm compared to female respondents concerning public nudity. Demographic differences furthermore were evident: In Denmark, younger generations were more receptive to public nudity, whereas in the German context the opposite pattern prevailed.

Specifically, 31% of 18- to 34-year-olds stated openness to practice nudity in public, versus nearly half of older adults.
