Vince Zampella, who helped create the wildly popular first-person shooter Call of Duty, has passed away in a car accident in Los Angeles, California aged 55.

The tragic news was verified by Electronic Arts, the publisher that controls Respawn Entertainment, the video game company that he helped create.

The celebrated video game developer lost his life when his vehicle was involved in a crash and burst into flames on a freeway in LA on Sunday, US media outlets report.

"We are facing an unimaginable loss, and our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends, his loved ones, and everyone impacted by his legacy," a representative from Electronic Arts said.
