The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of until after our chat. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and raw talent convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival
That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and being named best player.
A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
