The people of Israel mark two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations continue
Citizens have assembled across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership delayed official remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the agreement.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the discussions revealed that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.
The representative stated the morning session ended without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the two sides.
Critical Matters in Talks
- A lasting truce
- The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
- After-conflict governance of the region
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas militants - shared: "No place feels like home anymore and until every captive come back not a single person will feel safe."
"When we see everyone home again, we can relax again. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their backing for the families of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty continue in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do any agreement necessary for the captives to return. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israelis prefer the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.
From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the intense Israeli attacks continued.
In Gaza City, bombardments were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the east side area of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"When the evening comes, the dread comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.
"We are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, clinging, notably my youngest child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."
