Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
