We're Getting a New Game in the Finest Star Wars Series Ever Made, Helmed by a Mass Effect Trilogy Developer.

The galaxy far, far away fans are spoiled for choices when it comes to excellent gaming adventures showcasing the iconic energy blades, but the universe imagined by George Lucas is far beyond a battleground for fighting. Not many franchises have grasped this as well as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was forged in the classic computer role-playing game style that made companies like Obsidian and BioWare legendary. Now, after a number of delays and setbacks, The Game Awards has revealed that the community will soon be able to play a spiritual follow-up to the beloved franchise. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

The Major Announcement

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is labeled "a fresh single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual heir to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Veteran developer Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the director of the original KOTOR, is spearheading the project at Arcanaut Studios.

“When we created the original KOTOR, we wanted to build a ultimate Star Wars experience — shaping an adventure that contained all the things we dreamed of doing as Star Wars fans,” the developer said. “Now, 25 years after we began developing that game, our goals are just as ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic presents an possibility to delve into a current vision of a quintessential Star Wars experience, using cutting-edge technology and game design, and an all-new story crafted specifically to realize the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the center of KOTOR.”

A Welcome Surprise

The news is somewhat of a unexpected development, given that 2022 saw a recent try at an Old Republic game get shelved. However, industry whispers had suggested that a revival of KotOR, as well as one of its follow-up, had been in the works up until March 2025.

Here is the summary for the new title:

Developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.

Why KOTOR Matters

The classic role-playing games, which have seen recent ports to platforms like the Switch, are known for their narrative-focused, choice-driven, and RPG-stat-heavy approach to Star Wars. The games were impactful enough that they unintentionally established how people picture the Old Republic era as a whole, still today. The games bravely chose to question many aspects of Jedi lore that are often considered inarguable, like whether the faction and its understanding of the Force are true. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, went in a much darker direction by inviting players to consider if the world might not be wiser without the Jedi at all. Both games are highly regarded by fans years after their release, but the second installment in particular is considered by some as one of the greatest pieces of Star Wars media created.

A Fresh Start

And now, a few years after receiving a atmospheric trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, we're finally getting another game in the same vein. Given the craving for complex games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a modern approach on Knights of the Old Republic that's executed properly has the potential to be a massive hit.
