When an teenage makes club a historic moment in a key European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

This talent is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the team pursue future success.

Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
