The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
